The B license allows, under specific conditions, the operation of a light motorcycle with a displacement not exceeding 125 cm³ and a power of 11 kW. This equivalence does not arise solely from holding a car license: it is based on a minimum duration of the license and, in most cases, on specific training governed by the Highway Code.
Duration of the B license and minimum age to ride a 125 cm³
The first condition concerns the duration of holding the B license. Two full years of holding a B license are required before being able to ride a 125 motorcycle or scooter. This period starts from the date of issuance on the license, not from the date of enrollment in a driving school.
A driver who obtained their B license at 17 years old cannot therefore ride a 125 as soon as they turn 18. In practice, they will have to wait until they are 19 to meet this duration requirement. This point remains little known and regularly leads to fines during road checks.
As explained by several specialized resources, including the one allowing to ride 125 with a B license according to Auto l’Hebdo, the two-year rule applies to both motorcycles and three-wheeled scooters of category L5e.
Mandatory 7-hour training: content and regulatory limits
Once the duration is acquired, almost all B license holders must undergo 7 hours of training provided by an accredited driving school. This training does not lead to an exam: there is no practical or theoretical test at the end of the course.
The program is divided into three modules:
- A theoretical module of 2 hours covering regulations, visibility, and the specifics of riding a two-wheeled or three-wheeled motor vehicle
- A practical off-road module of 2 hours, focused on mastering the machine at slow speed (balance, braking, trajectories)
- A practical on-road module of 3 hours, conducted on open roads
At the end of the training, the school issues a certificate of completion that the driver must keep on them or in the vehicle during each trip. This document serves as proof in case of a check.
Important point not to be overlooked: the 7-hour training does not equate to the A1 license. It only grants the right to ride a light motorcycle (125 cm³, 11 kW max) or an L5e tricycle. Any motorcycle requiring an A2 or A license remains inaccessible with this single course.
Exemptions from the 125 training with a B license
Not all B license holders are required to take this course. An exemption exists for drivers who can prove that they insured and rode a 125 cm³ motorcycle between 2006 and 2010, a period during which training was not yet mandatory.
The proof relies on a statement of information issued by the insurer, certifying the subscription of a contract covering a two-wheeler of this category during the relevant period. Without this document, the exemption cannot be invoked.
Holders of a B license obtained before March 1, 1980 also benefit from an automatic equivalence with the A1 category, without any training required. This peculiarity is due to the fact that the license issued at that time included the operation of light motorcycles.
Validity abroad and technical inspection: two often overlooked constraints
The equivalence between the B license and riding a 125 cm³ is a French provision. It is not automatically recognized outside of France. A driver wishing to cross a border with their light motorcycle risks being denied the right to ride if the destination country requires a specific motorcycle license. Before any travel abroad, checking local regulations remains the only reliable precaution.
The technical inspection of motorcycles, now in effect, also applies to 125 cm³ vehicles ridden with a B license. Benefiting from an equivalence does not change the inspection schedule. For a new motorcycle, the first inspection occurs within six months before the fifth anniversary of its first registration.
Last practical constraint: the 7-hour training is not eligible for CPF. Unlike the standard motorcycle license, this short course is not listed in the catalog of training eligible for financing by the Personal Training Account. The cost, varying by driving schools, remains entirely the responsibility of the driver.
The training certificate does not have an expiration date. Once the course is completed, the right to ride a 125 cm³ remains valid as long as the B license itself remains valid, without any mandatory recycling or refresher courses.
